Maintaining the roads that we drive on every day is a never ending job. While that’s not something that every fully appreciates, it is something that we’re constantly reminded of as we drive through construction areas. It seems as if there is always some kind of road work being done but that’s because there usually is. It’s important that you take these workers and areas into consideration when driving and adjust accordingly.
There are always signs and alerts as you enter a construction area, instructing you of altered speed limits and warning to watch for the workers, something hopefully we all do. There are some other things to consider when driving in these areas. Sometimes the traffic can be very tight when driving through a construction zone, especially if they’ve taken two lanes and forced it into a single lane. It’s imperative that you keep a safe distance from the car in front of you as the room for error should something happens that you need to react to be much smaller in these situations.
It’s also best to not talk on your phone and even turn your radio down when driving through a construction area as you want to be as alert as possible in case something should happen. There is also the possibility that there will be loud noises coming from the actual road work itself and having less noise to filter through will make you safer. And as with all driving in less than ideal driving conditions, adjusting to poor weather in a construction area will mean everyone, drivers and workers, are safer.
