Many drivers will tell you that you don’t need your headlights on until it gets dark but everyone has been on the road with someone as dusk begins to give way to night and there’s someone that doesn’t have their lights on. Just because you can see them now, doesn’t mean that in just a few minutes you won’t be able to and it’s safe for you and them if they’re using their headlights. Part of being a truly safe driver is being aware of your surroundings and adjusting accordingly but the other side of that is making sure that you’re making yourself known to the other drivers on the road.
Most of us remember to turn our lights on when it’s dark (and when we don’t, we’re usually lucky enough to be flashed by a fellow driver as a friendly reminder) or when it’s raining or snowing but there are times when many drivers think that headlights are needed. The uncertainty usually occurs in the morning or evening, when it’s between light and dark but it can also be a concern right before or after a storm or simply on an overcast day.
The thing to remember is, that having your lights on is never a bad thing (unless of course you’re using your brights, in which case you’ll get one of those friendly reminders from a fellow driver) but not using them can be dangerous. The rule of thumb is, if you’re wondering if you should have them on, then you might as well turn them on. Visit us at http://www.defensivedriving.com
