The summer months means many people will be traveling. Often times these trips include long stretches of driving and that requires the proper preparation and planning. Some people will rely on lots of coffee or other sources of caffeine but that’s a dangerous game to play and one that isn’t nearly as effective as people believe. Not only is it not healthy, it can lead to bursts of alertness followed by crashes that can make you even more tired.
If you’re planning a long day of driving, the best thing to do is get the proper amount of rest but also give yourself time to fully wake up before getting behind the wheel. That can mean getting a good breakfast and scheduling stops throughout the day. Whenever possible, you should break long stretches of driving into shifts, giving everyone a chance to rest and preventing burnout. Should you feel yourself getting drowsy, find a safe place to pull over and take a few moments to gather yourself. This may mean taking a brief nap at a rest stop or just getting out to stretch your legs and breathe fresh air. Whatever it is, you need to make sure you’re doing what it takes to be alert on the road.
Don’t push yourself towards the end of a long drive. If you’re planning on stopping, don’t try and go that extra stretch before doing so.
